Drop
in to the Georgetown Train Station Interpretive Centre which
highlights the early history of this scenic waterfront town.
Georgetown is the capital of King’s County and the heart
of a long tradition with the sea. Merchants who became shipbuilders
and politicians created a community
that attracted extremely capable immigrants.
Transportation was a challenge for the earliest
French and Scottish settlements. A
wilderness coastline with estuaries that
reached
deep inland on an island made ferry systems a necessity.
The
transition from wood and sail to steel and steam is the history
of the Three Rivers area. They evolved into a fascinating network
that reached all the neighboring provinces and embraced a provincial
railway.
The
deep-water port in Georgetown attracted shipping and shipbuilders
in a period of political change and turbulent export markets. Year-round
communications were a long-unfulfilled issue underlying the fortunes
of the community.
The compelling stories of these winter ferries, summer ferries, trains and the
lives of some of the leading community figures are told on beautifully illustrated
interpretive panels and large murals.
